Product Description
The Anemic Lady — Samuel van Hoogstraten
A quiet room, a pale young woman, and a physician holding a glass vessel to the light. Painted by Dutch Golden Age artist Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678), The Anemic Lady turns an intimate domestic scene into something altogether more mysterious.
At first glance, the painting appears to depict an ordinary medical visit. The young woman sits languidly in an elegant interior while a physician examines her urine — a common diagnostic practice in seventeenth-century medicine. Yet paintings of this kind often carried another meaning. The doctor’s visit became a familiar visual language for lovesickness, desire and possible pregnancy, leaving the viewer to search the room for clues.
And there are clues everywhere.
The woman’s golden dress glows against the dark interior; rich textiles spill from the table beside her; a small cat waits quietly at her feet. Behind her, figures emerge from the shadows while doorways, pictures and architectural details draw the eye deeper into the house. Hoogstraten, a pupil of Rembrandt and a master of perspective and illusion, makes the interior itself part of the story.
The result is wonderfully enigmatic: part portrait, part domestic theatre, and part seventeenth-century visual riddle.
Presented in a slim black frame, the work takes on an unexpectedly contemporary character while preserving the depth and drama of the original. Its tobacco browns, old gold, ivory and deep crimson make it particularly striking among collected interiors, antique furniture, patterned textiles and richly layered rooms.
